September 15th I headed off to San Diego to meet up with my buddies for a Great White Shark Dive off Guadalupe Island off the Baja Coast of Mexico. We met up with Doc Anes and San Diego Shark Diving the trip organizers in San Diego and boarded a charter bus for the trip to Ensenada to board the boat. The Andrea Lynn left Ensanada about 1:00pm and we arrived at Guadalupe the next morning about 7:30am. San Diego Shark Diving had loaded the boat with 3 shark cages plus all the bait and chum to attract the sharks to the cages. The group included a very diverse group of 18 shark divers with all kinds of camera and video equipment with the hopes to capture images of these magnificent predators. The group was split in two which put 3 divers per cage for each 1 hour rotation in the cages. Water temp was around 69 F so a 7mm wet suit plus a hooded vest to keep warm was essential. San Diego Shark Diving had DUI weight harness systems with weights for us you needed 50lbs plus ankle weights to help you stand in the cages and keep your balance. The boat was ok and the food was good but the sharks were spectacular. If you love sharks go to www.sdsharkdiving.com and book this trip! These sharks are sadly disappearing and may become extinct in our life time, so I was glad I made this trip. Guests are encouraged by Shark Chic Jesse Harper to donate photos to the Guadalupe White Shark data base being accumulated along with field notes from these trips to aid research on the sharks. I sent Jesse a DVD with my stills and video once I got back to Hawaii and could edit and burn her a copy.
