Truk Lagoon

Every wreck diver dreams of Micronesia and the Island nation of Chuk  and diving Truk Lagoon .On the morning of Feb.14,1944
a surprise United States Navy air attack code named "Operation Hailstone" caught a fleet of Japanese Merchant vessels and warships by surprise in Truk Lagoon. 400 tons of bombs and torpedo were dropped. Attacks continued on Feb.18,1944. A total of forty ships and thousands of men went to the bottom. Ten weeks later, a second successful raid added a score more ship to the bottom. For more than two years after the war, oil from the sunken ships covered the beaches and reefs. I was fortunate to travel to Truk with a group of 9 divers we had booked for this adventure through our dive shop in Maui. We stayed at the Blue Lagoon resort and did our dives with Blue Lagoon Dive Shop located on the resort property. The staff at Blue Lagoon were friendly and very accommodating to our groups wishes.
We did a deep dive to 170'on the San Fransisco to film the tanks still sitting up right on the deck. We only had 12 minutes at depth and 26 minutes of deco which Blue Lagoon had hung nitrox tanks for us to come up and switch to for the long decompression stop. Our guide Rio was very knowledgeable about the wrecks and we enjoyed diving with him and were comfortable following him inside many of the wrecks to explore the engine rooms and different compartments inside the wrecks. The Blue Lagoon Resort was comfortable the food at the on sight restaurant was good and reasonably priced and diving with Blue Lagoon Divers was fun and informative.
