January brings the return of Humpback Whales here to the protected waters of West Maui. Whale season attracts thousands of visitors for a chance to get out on the water for a whale watch trip and a chance to see these magnificent mammals.I was out with a group of friends for a day of whale watching with our cameras ready and hoping for some great encounters when we lucked into a pod of whales that were as curious about us as we were about them. The 3 whales in this pod stayed with our boat as we drifted down wind across the channel for 3 hours, swimming around the boat under the boat and frequently spy hopping to check us out.
